Hyderabad: In order to pull the State out of power crisis, the State government has added about 4,190 MW of generation capacity to the installed capacity in the past three years. The Telangana government which would be completing three years in office on June 1 has taken steps to rejuvenate power sector in the State as a challenge and had put all out efforts to save the State from crisis in power supply.
According to officials, it has completed 600 MW power plant at Bhupalapally and another 1,200 MW power plant by Singereni, procured 570 MW from Thermal Power Tech, 178 MW from Central generation stations, 240 MW from Jurala hydel station, 30 MW from Pulichinthala hydel station, 1,273 MW from the solar energy parks and 99 MW from wind energy sources. This has increased the installed power generation to 11,689 MW from 6,575 MW.
They said the government was able to provide uninterrupted power supply just within six months of the State’s formation. It aimed to create generation capacity of 29,000 MW, including 5,000 MW of solar power. The government had allocated Rs 4,203 crore in 2017-18 budget to power sector, Rs 7,480 crore in the 2015-16 budget and Rs 5,341 crore in the 2016-17 budget.
Hyderabad city alone needed 2,000 MW per day and 25 lakh agriculture pump sets needed 2,500 MW. However, as the number of power generation stations was less in the State, power distribution companies struggled to supply as per the demand, the officials said.
With the efforts of the government, about 4,130 MW would be available to the State by the end of this year. It would get 800 MW from Palvancha power station, 1,000 MW from Chhattisgarh and 1,080 MW from Bhadradrai TPS. Apart from this, 90 MW would come from wind and 954 MW from the solar sources. State was expecting about 206 MW of more power from the Central generation stations, they added.
The sources said the overall generation capacity of the State will reach 15,032 MW by the end of this year. By adding 14,426 MW in the next three years, generation by power utilities in the State would be 29,000 MW. The government is expecting that demand from the industrial sector would be high due to several new industries coming up, implementation of Mission Bhagiratha and launch of Hyderabad Metro Rail which would need a lot of power.
