Hyderabad: National BC Welfare Association president and MLA R Krishnaiah on Sunday demanded that the government bear the hike in fee of degree and engineering courses. In a letter addressed to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, he said when fee reimbursement scheme was introduced in 2008, the entire fee was borne by the government.

Several restrictions were imposed in 2013 and fee reimbursement was made applicable to only those who achieved ranks under 10,000 marks in engineering. The government had been bearing a fee of Rs 35,000 for engineering and Rs 27,000 for MBA, MCA and pharmacy courses.

However, fee in the colleges was higher than this and the students were unable to bear it, he added. Recently, the government has hiked the fee in degree colleges and the hiked amount has been kept out of fee reimbursement scheme. The government should bear the hiked part also, Krishnaiah demanded.

Students of some castes of BC sections like washermen, barbers etc were unable to bear the high fees in degree colleges and were dropping out of colleges. Though the government had been bearing the entire fee of the SCs and STs, the same facility was not being extended to the BCs, Krishnaiah said.
