Hyderabad: Overflowing manholes is a common sight in the city during the monsoon season and a similar problem continues to cause inconvenience to students and management of the Krishnaveni Talent School at Chilkanagar. A manhole in front of the school was cleaned two days ago but just after minimal rainfall on Thursday night the sewerage water continues to overflow.

Apart from the overflowing sewerage water, the garbage piled up next to it threatens the hygiene of the children attending the school. Local residents had also complainedabout contaminated drinking water which is being polluted by the overflowing sewerage water.

After repeated complaints by the Krishnaveni Talent School, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) resolved the problem in front the school on Wednesday. Despite the efforts, sewerage water continues to overflow from the open manholes just after minimal rains.

Garbage removed from the manholes is also piled up next to the open manholes creating an unsafe environment for the children attending the school. The school authorities are worried about the hygiene of the children and also the open manholes can be threateningto the safety of the students.

Sharing her experience, Rasheeda, in-charge of Krishnaveni Talent School said, “Any child can fall into the open manholes. Such a stinking environment is in no manner hygienic. Moreover, water enters the cellar of the school during heavy rains where we have water tankers which we fear might get contaminated too.”

Adding to the woes, local residents have complained several times about the contaminated drinking water. “Once the supply starts in the morning, we leave the water running for first 10 minutes as the water in that interval is severely contaminated,” they said. Most of the residents have stopped consuming government supplied drinking water for the same reason and have shifted to private packaged drinking water vendors.
