Hyderabad: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the drug racket grilled cinematographer Shyam K Naidu on Thursday.

The questioning, which began at 10.15 am at the Prohibition and Excise office, ended at around 4 pm. Naidu arrived at the Excise office along with his advocate and a couple of friends. However, it is said that officials could not elicit much information useful for the investigation.

Sources said he was questioned about how the drug peddler Calvin got to know him and whether the drug peddler used him as a courier to pass drugs to other film personalities. He was also grilled whether he had information about any person from the entertainment industry helping Calvin spread the drug network.

Shyam Naidu is the second person from the entertainment industry to be questioned in connection with the drug racket since Tuesday. The SIT had questioned renowned director PuriJagannadh for over 10 hours on Tuesday.

The SIT also collected blood, hair and nail samples of Puri to find out if he was using drugs. Officials said they were getting some clues from the film personalities which would help them in further investigation. But in case of Shyam, no such sample was collected.

On Friday, the SIT will question character artist P Subba Raju. The SIT has issued notices to 12 film personalities including actors Ravi Teja, Navdeep, Tarun and Nandu, actresses Charmme, Mumaith Khan and others.

The drug racket created ripples as officials found that about 1,000 students of reputed private schools and colleges in the city were using high-end drugs such as cocaine, LSD and MDMA.

The SIT has so far arrested 13 persons, including US citizen Dundu Anish, who earlier worked for NASA and seven engineering graduates, most of whom were working for multi-national companies.

Meanwhile, representatives of three major courier firms DHL, Blue Dart and Fedex attended a meeting with the SIT officials as it has come to light that the drug peddlers used to get the stocks from foreign countries through courier services.

Officials said written instructions had been issued to the courier firms regarding prevention of delivery of banned narcotic and psychotropic substances by courier. The SIT has also written a letter to the Chief Post Master General seeking the department’s support in the investigation.
