Secunderabad: As if various diversions put up by the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) authorities at several points on the roads of Secunderabad are not enough, now there has been another major diversion at Oliphant Bridge for the last one week. This diversion is causing severe traffic jams and further delays for daily commuters.
A major hub with almost all parts of the city roads converging here, the area remains always busy with heavy vehicles and public moving throughout the day. With this diversion, the traffic goes haywire and vehicles move into small lanes of Secunderabad to find their route through busy markets to avoid the main stretch. HMR authorities claim that the diversion will continue for two more weeks.
One of the major issue is that the patients going from the North Zone of the city to the Gandhi Hospital through Chilkalguda Crossroads as the shortest route find it difficult to reach the hospital in time.
Prasad (32), an ambulance driver the at Gandhi Hospital said he had to either take the Rail Nilayam Road or the Bhoiguda and Monda Market roads while coming from Alwal, Trimulgherry, Patny, Paradise, etc., which caused delay in bringing the patients to the Hospital. “At least, one side of the road should have been kept open as with the patients, we cannot risk even the slightest delay as it can cost someone’s life,” he said.
Chilkalaguda Crossroads is one of the important converging points of Secunderabad with traffic from all four directions - Uppal, L B Nagar, A S Rao Nagar, ECIL, Musheerabad, Koti, Jubilee Bus Station (JBS), Begumpet, Alwal, etc - passing through it. While this route is regularly used by heavy traffic flowing from or to L B Nagar, Uppal, Tarnaka, Musheerabad, RTC Crossroads, etc., RTC buses coming or going to these areas have only been making it worse for the traffic as these buses cannot find a convenient diversion.
The driver of bus number 290U, running from Hayat Nagar to JBS, said while going from JBS to Hayatnagar it was not an issue but due to the diversion at Alugadda Bavi while going to JBS, the buses have to travel via Alpha Hotel after crossing Rail Nilayam Road to drop the commuters travelling to Secunderabad Station as they cannot touch the Chilkalaguda Crossroads going through Rathifile Bus Station.
“This is a major diversion as the Alpha Hotel road is already packed with numerous pedestrians and RTC buses,” he said. All buses travelling to JBS from L B Nagar, Hayatnagar, Uppal, etc., have been taking diversion adding to the hectic traffic on the Alpha Hotel road in front of the Secunderabad Railway Station.
Among the minor issues, commuters going to Uppal and L B Nagar from Secunderabad also have to take diversion through the busy streets of Monda Market and Bhoiguda to reach Chilkalaguda Crossroads where a temporary bus station has been set up for the buses of the same route.
Also, minor diversions necessitated near Clock Tower and around Jubilee Bus Station are making the situation worse. HMR authorities claim that the diversion for Oliphant Bridge is expected to continue until August 25.
