Warangal: A Pakistani national, Mohammed Arshad Mahamood, who was imprisoned at Warangal Central Prison on espionage charges, was released from the jail on Saturday.Aged about 42 years, he is a native of Khanpur Khatora of Raheemyarkhan district Bahawalpur division, in the Punjab province of Pakistan. He was arrested in 2004 and was convicted on April 30, 2009 by I additional metropolitan sessions judge, Hyderabad.

He was sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for 14 years for the charges under section 3 and 9 of Official Secrets Act and RI for 5 years under section 14 of Foreigners Act and RI for 14 years under section 120-B IPC (Criminal Conspiracy) and all the sentences were run simultaneously.

First, he was lodged at Chanchalguda Jail and later shifted to Warangal due to security reasons.His sentence came to and end on August 16, 2016 under remission rules and he was released from the jail for deportation as per rules. But the deportation process was not completed by that time as the Pakistan government did not respond to his case following which he was detained again at the jail.

Meanwhile, the concerned officials have provided the prisoner with consular access to establish his identity and he was said to be the first one to be provided with consular access. Recently, his deportation orders were issued followed by a one-way travel document by the Pakistani High Commission.

He was handed over to the SIT personnel from Hyderabad by the Warangal Central Prison Superintendent M Sampath. Arshad Mahamood’s deportation was scheduled to be completed by August 22. The jail official said the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (foreign division) issued orders asking the police to hand him over to Pakistan officials at Wagah on India-Pakistan border.
