Hyderabad: Come December, Area Hospitals (AHs) and Community Health Centers (CHCs) in tribal and urban areas in 13 newly created districts of the State will have their own blood banks.

According to the State Health Department (SHD) officials, lack of blood banks in the remote tribal areas had been remained as a hurdle to the doctors at the AHs and CHCs during emergencies. ``People had to rush to nearby district government hospitals or depend on private blood banks during emergencies,” said an official.

It was against this background that the State government had cleared a proposal to establish blood banks with an estimated cost of Rs 19.98 crore in tribal areas.

The new blood banks would be coming at the AHs and CHCs in Nagarkurnool, Ghatkesar, Medak, Bodhan, Utnoor, Asifabad, and Godavari Khani, Narsampet, Mahabubabad, Mulugu, Bhongir, Kondapur and at the District Hospital, King Koti in the city.

Speaking to The Hans India, The Telangana Vaidya Vidhana (TVV) Parishad Deputy Commissioner S Jayaram Reddy said that the clearance from the government had come following a report from the Commissioner of the Parishad to upgrade the area hospitals in newly created districts particularly, in the remote tribal areas, by establishing blood banks and blood components separately.

The Telangana State Blood Transfusion Council (TSBTC) had already given its clearance and the construction of new buildings has already been commenced, he added.

Besides, new equipment, each of the blood banks needed about 19 staff, for which proposals had been sent to the government to create posts of medical officer, lab technicians, nurses and the like. Once the finance department gives its nod and the staff is appointed, the Central Licenses Approving Authority (CLAA) would inspect the blood banks to give final clearance. The whole process is expected to be completed within three months, said another senior official from the SHD.
