Hyderabad: Stung by the criticism, on the government scheme of Bathukamma saree distribution, the Minister for IT and Municipal Administration K T Rama Rao charged the Opposition of stooping to low level of politics.

At a press conference late on Monday evening, the Minister said the Opposition has been creating hurdles in all the welfare schemes taken up by the government. The Congress which never ever thought of introducing such scheme was now organising incidents like burning sarees to defame the government.

Displaying some photographs, he said the incidents of burning sarees were pre-planned act of the Congress. He said most of the incidents took place in areas represented by Congress leaders. He alleged that as the distribution of sarees was in progress, some Congress activists snatched them from the hands of the women and set them on fire.

He said the culture of the people, particularly women is that they never burn a saree that is given as a gift. Even if they do not like it they will never burn it. They will either keep it aside or give it away to their servants. He said this was a massive scheme that was launched by the government for the first time and there is every possibility that there might have been some loop holes.

If so as responsible Opposition, the Congress should have drawn the attention of the government. But unfortunately, they stooped to low level of politics. The Opposition in the State do not have the culture of appreciating any good work being done by the government. Rama Rao said the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao always thinks big and the Congress is not able to digest it. Even if they do not have the heart to appreciate, they should at least desist from resorting to cheap politics, he added.

However, he accepted that they could not give handloom sarees as they did not have enough time. Rama Rao said from next year onwards they would place the orders well in advance. He said he had received telephone calls from many women thanking the government and the Chief Minister for launching the scheme to distribute sarees.
