Hyderabad: Telangana JAC, Chairman Prof M Kodandaram on Sunday has said that the State government is afraid of the JAC activities and has been resorting to arrests. But, his determination has become more stronger due to the arrest.

Addressing a press conference here at his residence a day after his arrest and release by the police in the wake of Amarula Spoorthi Yatra, Kodandaram took exception to his arrest. He said that the JAC had got oral permission for the phase-six of the yatra.

``The person who wanted to get the official permission letter was house arrested. The police changed its mind in the last minute and began arresting the JAC leaders right from the midnight. Police have arrested 300 JAC leaders in Warangal, 110 in Hyderabad and 400 in Manthani,” said Kodandaram.

The JAC chairman objected to police for asking about caste of the leaders arrested. ``Asking caste name is uncivilised… this should change. The police who came to arrest should have come in uniform; but they appeared in civil dress,” he said. He pointed out that arresting under section 151 was injustice.

This section is applied in the cases when there are chances of cognisable offences like rape or riots etc, he said adding that the JAC had applied for permission well in advance.

The JAC chairman alleged that the government was weakening and was afraid of the protest programmes of the JAC. The Saturday’s incident has further strengthened their determination to fight against the government. He further said that they would meet all the political parties, Governor and also President of India and bring to their notice about the Saturday’s incidents.

The JAC would take up the seventh phase of the yatra in Nalgonda on October 21 and 22. Already JAC has applied for the permission to the yatra and request the police to give permission.

He said that the government cannot give jobs to all the unemployed, but there are 2 lakh vacancies in the State and the JAC wants the vacancies to be filled immediately. Many youths have already committed suicide agitated over not getting any job.

He demanded the government to provide wages to the unemployed as per the orders of Supreme Court. Either the government should give employment or should provide unemployment allowances to them, he demanded.

Kodandaram said that government should fulfill the demands of the JAC. ``The JAC has the responsibility to sensitise the society. We cannot go backwards… we will move forward come what may. We have fought in the agitation for separate State… this is our government and we have right to fight for the rights of the people,” he added.
