The Minister was replying to questions raised by the MIM Members Akbaruddin Owaisi, Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, Mohd Moazam Khan, Jaffer Hussain, Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri, Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala, Kausar Moinuddin and BJP members G Kishan Reddy, K Laxman, Chintala Ramachandra Reddy, N VS S Prabhakar and Congress MLA Komatireddy Venkat Reddy.

Rama Rao said most of the drains in the Twin Cities had overflowed following heavy rains and it led to water stagnation at many localities. The GHMC has only 1,221 kms of stormwater drains of about 9,000 kms of road. Apart from this, lakes and nalas were encroached upon.

The GHMC, the Minister said, had undertaken the work of removing bottlenecks on 47 stormwater drains at a cost of Rs.230 crore. As many as 13 chronic water stagnation points were identified and work was being carried out to ease the problem.

He said a urban lake would be developed under Mission Kakatiya at a cost Rs 20 lakh. The GHMC has identified 346 vulnerable points which were prone to water stagnation.

Estimates were being prepared to carry out repairs at a cost of Rs.121.44 crores. By next monsoon, these points would be rectified, the Minister assured the House.

The Minister said that the GHMC had removed more than 75 lakh cubic meters of silt this year as against 43.61 lakh cubic meters silt last year. He said that the government had conducted internal survey on removing of silt in nalas, Cases were filed against the engineers, staff who failed to perform their duties properly.

The GHMC had allocated Rs 1.55 crore for the development of Nacharam nala and the tender process was completed, and the works would be launched very soon. He promised to hold a meeting with city MLAs soon.
