Hyderabad: In the wake of opposition parties raising a hue and cry over the Palamuru Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation Project (PRRLI) on various grounds, the State government has submitted a detailed report on the project to Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Based on a complaint lodged by opposition parties, particularly BJP senior leader N Janardhan Reddy, the PMO had asked the State government to submit a report on the project. The opposition parties alleged that designs were unscientific, and the government failed to address environmental concerns.
They also pointed out that the multi-crore worth lift irrigation project would stall other medium projects like Nettempadu, Kalwakurthy and Bheema that have been pending for decades in the most-backward Mahbubnagar district.

Meanwhile, the top officials of the State Irrigation department told The Hans India that the government, in its report, has explained the importance of the project i.e., to meet the drinking water needs of drought-hit Mahbubnagar and address water scarcity of Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad districts, besides addressing the irrigation needs of Nalgonda.

The project has been taken up with an aim to make optimum utilisation of river Krishna water allocated to Telangana. While the state has been given right to utilise 299 tmc ft of water every year, it has not been able to utilise more than 60 per cent of the assured waters due to lack of infrastructure for the storage of water, the officials added.

The project once completed will lift 90 tmc ft of water from the foreshore of Srisailam reservoir during flood days at the rate of 1.5 tmc ft every day besides provide irrigation waters to 10 lakh acres in Mahbubnagar, Ranga Reddy and Nalgonda districts and drinking water to Hyderabad and its adjacent areas.

The government further clarified the Centre that the works were taken up only for drinking purpose, while works for irrigation needs would be taken up only after getting all required permissions from the Ministries concerned, particularly Union Ministry of Water Resources and Ministry of Environment and Forests. Meanwhile, the Irrigation department officials will meet the officials of the Centre soon and make a presentation on the importance of the project for Telangana’s growth.
