Hyderabad: Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise Department Somesh Kumar directed all excise officers to keep a strict vigil on liquor supply and sales during the ensuing assembly elections. While addressing a meeting here on Saturday, he said with the election code of conduct in effect, Excise Department will have a strict control over the supply and sales of liquor as any rise in supply of liquor during elections could be used to lure voters.

Somesh Kumar said, “There are 2,216 registered wine shops in Telangana each shop is under keen observation with CCTV cameras. Before elections wine shop owners were directed to maintain accounts on both inflow and outflow of liquor supply. Bulk supply of liquor is strictly prohibited. In case of bulk supply liquor shop license will be cancelled immediately.”

In a discussion with DGP Mahender Reddy, Excise officials decided to strengthen task force on 19 check posts along the State highway borders, to ensure there is no interstate liquor transport. Excise officials also identified porous routes through the villages assigned officers to ensure regulation of liquor flow. “Well in advance, Inter-state border meetings are being conducted with DC’s, who are coordinating with bordering district officers to crackdown on illicit liquor,” Somesh Kumar added.

139 excise stations in the State are assigned to keep keen eyes on illegal trafficking of cheap liquor. “Strict punishment will be given to any vehicle for carrying or transporting liquor illegally to the districts,” he said. For any complaints or violations in the election code of conduct with the influence of liquor, citizens can contact toll free number 1800-425-2523.
