Hyderabad: Heavy and sudden downpour in many parts of Hyderabad and continuous drizzle since morning on Wednesday caused severe hardships to the denizens.
Employees heading to offices were the worst sufferers. Vehicular traffic was severely affected in many areas due to water stagnation on roads. Rain occurred in Tankbund, Koti, Sultan Bazaar, Begum Bazaar, Abids, Nampally, Bashirbagh, Hyderaguda, Lakdikapul, Panjagutta, Khairatabad and Ameerpet.
The Met department warned of heavy rain in the next 48 hours at Charminar, Khairatabad, L B Nagar and other areas of the city. Meanwhile, the GHMC officials and disaster management teams were placed on alert. GHMC Commissioner Dana Kishore reviewed the situation.
He appealed to the residents to postpone their travel plans temporarily in view of the forecast of thundershowers lashing many districts in Telangana. Mayor Bonthu Rammohan also reviewed the situation in the GHMC control room.
While many people with their roots in the districts have already left the twin cities to celebrate Dasara festival with their dear ones, heavy rush of passengers was witnessed during the last two days at the railway and RTC stations. The police had to be summoned to regulate movement of people at the Secunderabad railway station.
The 12.38 cm rainfall forced several people to take shelter near shops and under flyovers. There was knee-deep water in several areas and took hours for water to recede. People who headed for work were caught off-guard and those who stayed back in their houses, decided to stay put.
