Hanamkonda: Kakatiya University is hosting South Zone Inter University Handball Tournament for Women, informed the university Vice-Chancellor Prof R Sayanna. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, he said the event will take place from December 8 to 11 on the campus sports field. Five new handball grounds have been prepared to organise the tournament. Teams from 46 universities with a total of 750 players will be participating in the tournament.

Prof R Sayanna said that different committees have been constituted to look after the arrangements, which were already completed for the smooth conduct of the event. AK Tarzan of Islamic University of Science and Technology, Jammu and Kashmir will be the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) observer for the tournament.

Accommodation to the visiting players will be provided on university campus, at Kakatiya Institute of Technology and Science and Chaitanya Degree and PG College in the city, Prof Sayanna informed. The university has the distinction of hosting Central Zone and South Zone Inter-University Tournaments in the past successfully and the university students have won several medals. The men’s team of the KU won the first place and the women team fourth place in Central Zone Inter-Universities Handball tournament held at Kakatiya University in 2013, the Vice-Chancellor noted.

The tournament will be inaugurated by Prof Sayanna on Friday. The University Sports Board Secretary G Pani is the organising secretary for the handball tournament. A contingent of sixteen players of home team is being trained under coach B Ramesh and the manager of the team is ML Josephine. Later the Vice-Chancellor along with university officials inspected the grounds and reviewed the arrangements.
