Sheep scheme boosts shepherds income: Jagtial Collector

On Thursday, he visited Sirikonda and Gollepalli villages of Buggaram mandal and Kummaripalli village of Velgaturu mandal and inspected the sheep units that were sanctioned under the scheme to shepherds.
“Out of the allotted 9,800 sheep units, 8,900 units have been distributed in the district till date. The remaining units also will be distributed within 10 days, so that the district will be made as the first one to complete the target of sheep distribution in the State,” the Collector said.
The officials of Animal Husbandry department had gone through several problems in visiting Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra stated for collecting sheep to be distributed under SRS. About 1.89 lakhs of sheep were purchased from other states and distributed among the shepherd families across the district, he informed.
“Within three to four months, 25 per cent growth rate is observed in the sheep population, which gave birth to about 50,000 lambs. The increase in the number of sheep had created problem for the shepherds in providing shelter for them.” The Collector assured of sanctioning funds to each shepherd family for constructing sheds under Employment Guarantee Scheme.
About Rs 36.40 lakhs of insurance was claimed for about 700 dead sheep that were distributed in the first phase. After completing the first phase of sheep distribution, extra sheep will be distributed to the beneficiaries to replace the dead ones.
Sharath suggested the shepherds not to neglect whenever the sheep units fell ill and told to take them to the nearest veterinary hospital or to dial 1962 to get aid from mobile veterinary vehicle.
District Animal Husbandry Department Additional Director Ashok Raju, Mandal tahsildars and Veterinary Assistant Surgeon were present along with others.
