Joining the prestigious Indian civil-services is a cherished dream for millions of young aspirants. The year-long, three-stage selection process called the Civil-Services examination conducted by the UPSC culminates with the personality test or the interview. For her, giving up wasn’t an option.
She knew she wanted to do it and there was no looking back. After her third attempt Jameel Fatima Zeba, a resident of Manikonda, Hyderabad, secured 62nd rank in the Civil Services Examinations 2018. And, she inspires every woman to believe in themselves and embark on their journey towards accomplishing their goals.
As a kid, Zeba never dreamt that she would become an IAS officer, but she always knew that she wanted to be in a position where she was successful and happy. She said that in college she gained the maturity to take a decision about her career in civil services. She completed her MBA from St. Francis College.
Clearing the exam in her 3rd attempt, there were several times when the 25-year-old doubted herself over having the ability to do so. “As this examination is very tough, I never thought I had the potential to clear it, but I worked hard and studied.” She added, “The exam requires a lot of self-belief as it is going to be tested at different levels, because this exam process itself is very long.”
“It’s normal that you have your delusions and wonder if you are doing the right thing and if you are going the right way. It’s important that one takes a leap of faith. Always have faith in oneself,” said Zeba.
Zeba shared that without her parents support she couldn’t have done it. They supported her emotionally and were there for her whenever she needed them. She said that her father played an important role as he motivated her and guided her through the process.
The syllabus for civil services is very vast. One needs to acquire knowledge of national importance like international issues, political issues, environment issues. After all, one needs to know everything under the solar system. Zeba spent 6-8 hours a day studying and working towards her target. To achieve something in life, sacrifice is the primary requirement. According to her, the major sacrifice was giving up on life filled with enjoyment.
Initially, she was unhappy about having to sit in one room and studying all day long, while her friends were carrying on with their respective lives, going to college and experiencing a different world altogether. “No matter what, at the end of the day this exam requires a lot of sacrifices if you want to come out successful.”
Lastly, Zeba advices young aspirants to work hard and never forget to believe in oneself as this examination is not only a test of intelligence but also a test of patience and character.
