Former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener has been named head coach of Afghanistan cricket team. The 48-year-old will be replacing Phil Simmons, who recently completed his tenure as Afghanistan's coach.

Klusener is a Level 4 certified coach and has been chosen among 50 applicants, who competed for the role.

Speaking on Klusener's appointment as the head coach, LutfullahStanikzai, CEO of Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), said, "Lance Klusener is a renowned name in the cricketing world. It will be great to see our players benefit from his vast experience both as player and a coach."

Sharing views on his new role, Klusener said, "I am extremely excited and honored to be given the opportunity to work with some of the best talent in world cricket. Everyone knows the fearless brand of cricket Afghanistan play. I am very confident that with some hard work we can become one of the best sides in the world. I am really looking forward to working with the Afghanistan team and helping them take their cricket to the next level."

The South African's first assignment will be to prepare the team when they take on West Indies in India in November.

Klusener's credentials as a coach include his stints with the Mumbai Indians, South Africa's Test side, Dolphins franchisee in South Africa domestic cricket, Zimbabwe, and South Africa's T20I side.

Lance Klusener represented South Africa in 49 Tests and 171 ODIs. Regarded as one of the finest all-rounders from Africa, the cricketer is fondly remembered for his incredible match-winning abilities.
