Police said on Tuesday, several collisions between the family's automobile and a lorry on the Chennai-Trichy national highway near Veppur in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district resulted in the deaths of five family members, including two children. Due to the early morning traffic gridlock brought on by the construction of a flyover at Iyyanarpalayam, the automobile, headed for Chennai, had stopped near Veppur when a speeding lorry struck it from behind.

A senior police official said that the accident caused the car to accelerate ahead, collide with the vehicle in front of it, and crash between two lorries. All five of the car's occupants perished instantly once it was fully crushed.

Police identified the unfortunate car's driver as Nanganallur, Chennai resident Vijayaraghavan. His mother, wife, and two children also passed away instantly. When police arrived on the scene, they quickly removed the remains and sent them for an autopsy to a nearby government hospital. After the collision, the lorry driver ran away but was eventually apprehended and arrested by police.
