Hyderabad: A major fire broke out at a chemical factory in Jeedimetla Industrial Area on Saturday morning. No causalities were reported as the unit was closed for a long time and reopened recently.

According to police, fire broke out in a distillation column at Karthikeya chemical factory in Jeedimetla Industrial area on early morning at around 5 am.

The unit produces and stores solvents, which are highly flammable. This unit was closed for the last three years and recently management have secured permission from Pollution Control Board (PCB) and started work initially.

According to Assistant District Fire Officer (ADFO), on receipt of the information at round 5:10 am, fire extinguishers rushed to the spot along with five water tankers, in which two from Jeedimetla, one each from Sanathnagar, Kukatpally and Secunderabad.

Fire fighters worked hard for more than three hours to douse the flames. Police suspect short circuit may be the reason for mishap. Property loss is yet to be estimated, said police.
