Hyderabad: The Congress has suffered heavy vote losses due to Bharatiya Janata Party in the municipal elections as it got only 21 per cent of the total votes polled and lost many of the municipalities.

According to sources, the party had polled 7.96 lakh votes out of total 34 lakh valid votes and BJP got about 5.46 lakh votes. The saffron party got 14.9 per cent of the votes.

Congress has won 14 per cent of the total wards in the State and BJP won 6 per cent of the wards. With the adverse impact of the BJP, Congress suffered losses in old Adilabad, Karimnagar and Nizamabad districts.

Congress fared poorly in these three districts. The Congress also suffered due to BJP in the suburban areas of Hyderabad city. BJP got good number of votes in the municipal corporations and municipalities around Hyderabad. In Vikarabad district also Congress suffered at the hands of BJP.

The party leaders are of the opinion that the Congress suffered losses due to the urban voting pattern and also the Citizenship Amendment Act issue. Usually the BJP got popularity among the youngsters of the urban areas and this helped to get good number of votes in Hyderabad, Nizamabad and Karimnagar cities.

Though Congress expected that people would not vote to BJP, their calculations went wrong and BJP emerged strong party in the urban areas. The BJP did not make any impact in the rural local body elections. But it has shown its impact in the ULB elections.

The Congress has been getting more than 25 per cent votes from the general elections to Assembly, Parliament and rural local body elections since 2104.

However, this percentage dropped by four points in the ULBs.If Congress was polled same number of votes like in Parliament, Assembly and RLB polls, it could have got more number of wards and could have won at least 20 to 25 municipalities.

Party leaders said that the CAA issue has polarized the Hindu vote in favour of the BJP and Muslim vote in favour of TRS. Though they have raised hue and cry over the CAA, the Muslims did not voted to Congress.

They said that presence of rebels of TRS in large numbers has also made the Congress to suffer vote losses. The rebels have taken away good number of Congress votes in several municipalities.

The party leadership also did not provided help to the candidates of the municipal elections and it was one of the important reasons for heavy vote loss, they said.
