Bhadrachalam: A senior assistant in the Revenue Department was arrested and remanded in connection with an alleged job fraud in which he reportedly collected nearly Rs 8 crore from 54 unemployed persons by promising them jobs in the Bhadradri Kothagudem district, police said on Monday.

The accused was identified as Korl Kalyan, a resident of Samithi Singaram village in Manuguru mandal. According to the police, Kalyan allegedly collected money from unemployed persons in Bhadrachalam, Manuguru, Palvancha, Illandu, Cherla, Dummugudem, Wajedu, Burgampahad, and other areas, promising them jobs at BTPS Manuguru and ITC’s Sarapaka facility.

A case was registered at Bhadrachalam Town Police Station about 10 days ago following a complaint by Bhadrachalam resident Rayala Srinu.

Police subsequently launched a search for Kalyan and apprehended him in Bhadrachalam on September 6.

During interrogation, Kalyan allegedly admitted to collecting money from people after assuring them of employment and losing the amounts in online cricket betting, police said.

According to the police, Kalyan had developed an online cricket betting habit and lost substantial sums of money. He allegedly collected money from people known to him by assuring them of jobs and subsequently used the money for online betting.

Police also said cases had been registered against the accused in different areas and that those cases were under investigation.

Bhadrachalam DSP M Arun Kumar urged unemployed persons to remain cautious of individuals promising jobs in return for money. He appealed to the public to immediately inform the police if they come across such fraudulent activities.
