Amaravati: Urging the central government's probe into the gas leak tragedy at LG Polymers India Limited (LGPI) in Visakhapatnam and support to the victims, the former CM and TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. He said that in the ghastly accident of gas leak left a trail of immense sadness.

Naidu urged to constitute a scientific experts' committee to enquire into the alleged gas leakage and the circumstances that led to the release of toxic vapours or gases. Stating that, the company claims that the gas leaked out was Styrene, he maintained that there were conflicting reports of other toxic gases being in, needs to be investigated to understand the enduring health impacts.

TDP supremo suspected that the long-lasting impact of the health of those undergoing treatment is of serious concern. He expressed worry that the toxins emitted may cause permanent damage to the victims.

He suggested close monitoring of the ambient air quality in and around Visakhapatnam city for understanding the present and future impact. Naidu further asked Prime Minister asked to deploy national and international health-experts for health assessment and accordingly take immediate and long-term health measures. This assessment would be helpful in giving compensation.

Suggesting to generating electronic health record of each individual in the affected areas, he opined that it would help in building confidence among the victims.

At the same time, he appreciated the initiatives and quick action of the Prime Minister and National Disaster Response Team (NDRF) in mitigating damage caused by the chemical mishap. The NDRF swung into action for neutralizing the toxic effects of the gas and further airlifting Para Tertiary Butyl Catechol (PTBC) from Gujarat has happened in quick succession with Modi's prompt directions.
