Visakhapatnam: The police cracked Villapu Rambabu's murder case at Vambay Colony in PM Palam police station limits and arrested eight persons on Friday. Speaking to media here on Saturday, Deputy Commissioner of Police-I S Ranga Reddy said the main accused involved in the case was Puthi Venkatesh alias Potti Venkatesh, who works as a painter after completing ITI.

"Rambabu was murdered on September 3 at 11:15 pm and the police cracked the case within 48 hours based on the authentic information received by them. "Old rivalry is said to be reason for murder. We are keeping a close tab on happenings at slum areas and ensures to maintain law and order to avoid such incidents from recurring," the DCP informed.

According to police, there were frequent disputes between two groups. While a group included Rambabu, Anju, Shiva, another group consists of Venkatesh, Krishna Mohan, who had left for Hyderabad, among others.

Both the groups had differences and kept quarrelling with each another. On September 3, Rambabu was attacked by Venkatesh gang with stones, knife and sticks, killing him before fleeing the crime scene.

A Santosh Kumar, Jami Naveen Reddy, B Naveen, K Sandeep Kumar, G Balaji Rakesh, A Santosh Bhavani Sankar Reddy and P Narayana were among those who were arrested along with Venkatesh. The DCP said the accused were sent to remand.

About violating traffic rules, Ranga Reddy said close to 1,000 cases were booked a day in the recent past as many failed to adhere to traffic rules. "Among others, common violations include not wearing helmets, triple riding and open drinking which would be strictly monitored and none would be spared in this regard.

In the past three days, 3,000 cases were booked against violators for not wearing helmets alone," he warned. With most accidents taking place because of head injuries, he said the police were keeping a close tab on those not wearing a helmet. "Though we are yet to implement new traffic rules followed by the State government's order, traffic violation will not be tolerated," he asserted.
