Tirupati: The Chittoor district has been contributing its might in transporting milk to national capital Delhi and completed exporting one crore litres now.
Being the chief producer of milk in the state by producing around 32 to 34 lakh litres daily on which 10 lakh farmers are depending, it was able to export milk to neighbouring states on day-to-day basis besides sending to Delhi periodically.
During the lockdown, South Central Railway has made efforts to ensure uninterrupted supply of various essential commodities by operating freight and parcel trains regularly to various parts of the country.
Under this initiative, the SCR has operated 'Doodh Duronto' which is a special train to transport milk in an effort to balance the milk supply across the country.
The milk was being transported from Renigunta junction to Hazarath Nizamuddin through special trains carrying milk tanks. This was something new from the past experience in which milk has been transported by attaching milk tanks to the scheduled passenger carrying trains.
The first 'Doodh Duronto special' was dispatched from Renigunta to Hazarat Nizamuddin on March 26 during lockdown-I.
These special trains have been running with six milk tankers and transport 2.40 lakh litres of milk with each one having a capacity of 40,000 litres in a train.
In view of the demand, the train has been running every alternate day from Renigunta and the number of milk tanks have also gone up to eight in some trips as well. So far, around 42 trips of Doodh Duronto special trains have been operated and transported 1.04 crore litres of milk.
Also, these milk specials are permitted to run with an average speed of 110 kms per hour without any enroute detention, so that the train reaches the destination within 36 hours.
SCR General Manager Gajanan Mallya has appreciated the staff for their efforts which helped in crossing one crore litres of milk transport.
The DRDA along with private diaries have been coordinating with railways in making milk exports possible.
