Srikakulam: Prohibition and Excise Department has earned Rs 26.68 crore revenue in nine days on liquor in Srikakulam district. As part of easing of existing Covid-19 lockdown, liquor shops were opened from 4 May. Out of crorescrorestotal 186 shops, 180 outlets were opened across the district.

On first day, liquor was sold at 25 per cent enhanced price, on the second day, liquor price was again increased by 50 per cent on existing price, and on third day the hike was 75 per cent. On first day, there was a huge demand for liquor as the outlets were opened 43 days after they were shut. Liquor worth Rs 4,53, 29,000 was sold and second day. liquor sale declined to Rs 2, 59, 74, 742.

The price hike had led to sharp decline in sale, according to observers. On May 6, total revenue earned through liquor sales was Rs 2.70 crore, on May 7 it was reported as Rs 2.68 crore and on on 10 May, the revenue went up slightly to Rs 3.05 crore. "Total revenue from liquor for nine days from May 4 to 12 is Rs 26.68 crore," according to Deputy Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise Department, S Sukesh.
