Tirupati: In an effort to bring down expenditure towards power charges, the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) has taken up construction of floating solar power plant in Ramapuram reservoir from where water is supplied to city under Telugu Ganga Water Supply Scheme.

The plant which was taken up under Smart City Project (SCP) with 4 MW power generation capacity was estimated to cost Rs 21.96 crore. Municipal Commissioner PS Girisha who inspected the ongoing solar power plant works at Ramapuram reservoir on Thursday sought the representative of L and T Company to complete the works early.

Commissioner said that the solar power help to some extent the municipal corporation to tide over the mounting power charges. Floating panels will be set up on the waters in the reservoir for solar power generation, he said adding the corporation can use the power from the plant for its various power needs.

The floating panels on the reservoir water also help to save water by reducing the evaporation of water, he averred.
