The number of crimes took place against women in various forms in the state for the last four years, are alarming.

Amaravati: Number of crimes took place against women in various forms in the state for the last four years, are alarming. Altogether, 55,345 atrocities took place against women from 2016 to 2019, according to a document from the Home Ministry.

The highest number of cases were recorded in the year 2017, to the tune of 14,696, when compared with other years. 13,948 cases were booked in the year 2016, 14,048 cases in 2018 and 1,653 cases in 2019 till October.

This comparative statement on crime against women in AP for the years 2016 to 2019 is revealing the importance of creating awareness among the public and giving stringent punishments to the criminals.

Among all, the cases of harassment, outraging of modesty and cases under the Dowry Prohibition Act are very high.

More than 5,500 cases booked under the harassment of women in 2016, nearly 6,000 cases in 2017, more than 6,350 in 2018 and about 6,000 in 2019. The outraging of modesty cases, including 4477 in 2016, 6672 in 2017, 4215 in 2018 and 3601 in 2019.

At least 1109 cases in 2016, 1174 in 2017, 794 in 2018 and 801 in 2019 under the DP Act booked. There are 190 dowry deaths recorded in 2016, 149 in 2017, 140 in 2018 and 120 in 2019. Dowry murder cases also at the concerning level, which followed as, 80 in 2016, 49 in 2017, 30 in 2018 and 35 in 2019.

Under the category of abetment of suicide, at least 526 cases registered in 2016, 496 in 2017, 380 in 2018 and 316 in 2019.

343 women were murdered in 2016, 316 in 2017, 303 in 2018 and 233 in 2019.

The rape cases also at high in number. At least 969 rape cases booked in 2016, 1046 in 2017, 1096 in 2018 and 1010 in 2010.

Cases related to the abduction of kids and crime against them were recorded as 456 in 2016, 575 in 2017, 542 in 2018 and 415 in 2019. The bigamy cases including 240 in 2016, 262 in 2017, 195 in 2018 and 146 in 2019 registered.

During a discussion on the safety of women in the Assembly on Monday, the Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy stated that there was an urgent need to create confidence among the public and fear in the minds of criminals. He also added that the number of crimes against women in the last five years also registered at an alarming stage.
