Vijayawada: Muslim leaders on Thursday met Deputy Chief Minister Amzath Basha and requested him to persuade the government to stop appointing khazis. Addressing the gathering at a programme organised by Muslim religious heads at Labbipet, Amjad Basha said as per the population the government was appointing khajis in the state.

United Muslim of AP convener Moulana Mohammed Altaf Ali Raza said that khajis are respectable people and if the government appoints them as they wish the sanctity of the religion will be at stake as there are many religious customs and traditions.

If the government was appointing khajis to perform marriage then they should be appointed as Nayab Khajis, he said and alleged that the newly appointed Khajis were performing child marriages and illegal marriages. Moulana Zakir Hussain, Moulana Abdul Mastan, Moulana Abdul Razzak and others were present.
