Bollywood actress Kangna Ranaut's Thalaivi is one of the most anticipated movies this year. The movie is a biopic of late South Indian actress and politician J Jayalalithaa. Kangna plays Puratchi Thalaivi while Aravind Swami essays the role of late Tamil actor and politician MGR. The movie also stars Prakash Raj, Madhoo and Bhagyashree in key roles.
The movie was to hit theatres 26 June. However, with uncertainty looming large, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic many filmmakers are going in for direct release on the OTT platform. The first Kollywood movie to take that route fearing losses for the producers was Jyotika's Ponmagal Vanthal. The movie was bankrolled under Suriya's 2D Entertainment banner. Despite theatre owners threatening to boycott his future movies, the Kollywood actor went ahead with the digital release of his actress wife's courtroom drama Ponmagal Vanthal.
Now, with reports of the digital rights of Kangna's much awaited movie Thalaivi being sold to both Amazon and Netflix, rumours are afloat that this Kollywood movie directed by AL Vijay too could hit the digital streaming site soon instead of releasing in theatres.
However, Kangna is believed to have put rumours to rest saying that Thalaivi was best enjoyed on the big screen despite the fact that the digital streaming rights of the movie had been sold to both Amazon and Netflix for a whopping amount. Now, if you are wondering how much the makers would have got from the OTT platforms, the leading lady of the multilingual fare Thalaivi is believed to have said that the movie's digital rights fetched the makers a massive Rs 55 crores. Isn't that impressive?
