Visakhapatnam: In a bid to get the feel of nationalism in the students, GITAM University has chosen white kurta pyjamas (for boys) and kurta-salwar (for girls) along with stoles for the 10th convocation ceremony of its graduating batch. For the first time, students will receive their degrees in GITAM not in the British-time gowns and headgears, but in Indian clothes. GITAM is the first university adopting this in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

'Our students will not wear the colonial convocation robes and caps for the ceremony, says Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.Sivarama Krishna adding, "Only the dignitaries on the podium wear the gowns. But if we are asked to replace even those with traditional attires, we are absolutely fine with that." He mentioned that this is a real tribute to Mahatma Gandhi who aspired for the development of the handloom industry in the country. We are distributing "Gandhi Autobiography" to all passing out graduates during the 10the Convocation, he added.

GITAM Deemed to be University is planning to organize its 10th Convocation on November 9 in the presence of AICTE Chairman Prof.Anil D.Sahasrabudhe.

This year in the month of June the apex body in higher education the University Grants Commission (GUC) has requested the universities to follow Indian tradition during convocations. The UGC circular mentioned that using ceremonial robes made out of handloom fabrics would not only give a sense of pride of being Indian but also be more comfortable in the hot and humid weather. Greater usage of handloom garments for apparel would promote the handloom industry in the country.

The UGC Secretary Prof.Rajnish Jain requested the universities consider handloom fabric for ceremonial dresses prescribed for special occasions like convocation etc. He also requested the universities to submit the action taken report on this.
