In our country, National Women's Day is celebrated on February 13 as the birth anniversary of the Sarojini Naidu, the nightingale of India. Naidu was an acclaimed poet and Indian political activist. She earned the sobriquet 'Bharat Kokila' or 'Nightingale of India' with her poetry work.

We all know Sarojini Naidu for her work on anti-imperialistic ideas, civil rights and women's emancipation. She played a prominent role in the struggle for our country's independence from British rule.

Sarojini Naidu was born in a Bengali family on February 13, 1879, in Hyderabad. She completed her studies in Chennai, London and Cambridge. Indian National Congress' movement for India's independence inspired Sarojini Naidu a lot. After which she became a part of the Indian nationalist movement and started following Mahatma Gandhi.

Sarojini Naidu was appointed resident of the Indian National Congress in 1925. She was given the position of the Governor of the United Provinces in 1947. She became the first woman to hold the office of Governor in the Dominion of India.

She used to write poems on more serious themes like patriotism, romance, and tragedy. Her poetry also included children's poems. In 1912, the poem "In the Bazaars of Hyderabad" was published and it became one of the most famous poems written by Naidu.
