Bengaluru: In the face of widespread public opposition, the Karnataka government on Thursday made a u-turn by withdrawing an order issued on Wednesday imposing 10-day night curfew in the State from December 24 to January 2 following reports that a new variant of coronavirus has surfaced in the UK and other European countries.

According to a fresh statement issued on Thursday, the government stated, "After receiving feedback from the public that a night curfew is not needed and after discussing the decision with senior officials, it was decided to withdraw the order. The public should prevent the spread of the virus by self-imposing regulations, wearing masks, maintaining distance, avoiding unnecessary travel and maintaining strict adherence to government-imposed COVID-19 control rules".

However, the government clarified that only night curfew has been withdrawn, restrictions on Christmas and New Year-eve celebrations will continue to be in place. "Government should think before taking any decisions. It has taken three different decisions on night curfew and finally ended up withdrawing it. The two weeks between Christmas to the first few days of the New Year is a crucial holiday season for all commercial vehicle operators. We cab drivers will be getting enough bookings to sustain our business which has been hit hard by Covid-19. Now the government withdrew the night curfew which people opposed, I request the government should stick to this final decision" Tanveer Pasha, president, Ola, Taxiforsure and Uber Drivers and Owners Association told The Hans India.

In the light of a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 virus detected in the United Kingdom, the Karnataka police had on Thursday even issued the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the night curfew, but by evening the government withdrew its decision.

Earlier, as per the order issued on Wednesday, the night curfew was to be implemented from Thursday night to January 2, between 11 pm and 5 am. As per the order, movement of individuals was to be strictly prohibited during these hours and only ferrying of goods by trucks, goods vehicles or any other carriers were allowed.
