Gaddiannaram: Mayor Dr Bonthu Rammohan launched an intensive cleanliness drive & IEC (Information, Education and Communication) Campaign to improve sanitation in Gaddinnaram Ward no-23 on Tuesday.

Works like filling of potholes, footpath, streetlights, nala cleaning, lifting of accumulated garbage, C&D (construction and debris) waste, spraying and fogging operations, removing unauthorised flexis, banners, taking up engineering repair works and intensive sweeping are done in the intensive cleaning drive.

Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said, "Around 20,000 sanitation workers striving very hard round the clock to keep the city of 1 crore population clean but some people are throwing garbage in open places instead of handing over it to Swachh Autos to avoid payment of Rs 50 monthly charges. This is the reason for garbage piling up at open places and also at dustbins daily. To control this menace, GHMC is proposing to keep CC camera at Garbage vulnerable points to levy penalties and punishment."

Further, he appealed to the citizens to co-operate with the GHMC in keeping the city clean and said, "as we keep our houses neat and clean, we should also have responsibility to keep our surroundings tidy. The apartment people and colony people should keep the garbage of all residents at one particular place so that the Swachh Auto worker can take it from a single point instead of collecting it from each house hold there by save time and enables to cover more area."

MLA Sudheer Reddy also joined Mayor in the intensive cleanliness drive. Speaking there, he said, "Due to lack of coordination with the wings, duplication of work is happening. This is the reason for waste material being left on roads after desilting of nalas, repair works of roads and cleaning of drainage. The same material is again entering into nalas and drains there by wasting manpower and money." He requested officials not to repeat such mistakes while executing other works in future.

Special Commissioner for Sanitation Sujatha Gupta, addressing the gathering said, "GHMC is taking up 360 degree angle work of a particular ward by coordinating with all wings of GHMC such as engineering, sanitation, electrical, entomology and others." She further added, "Apart from regular staff, additional staff is deployed from all wings to make it a model ward in LB Nagar Zone and the same programme will be taken up in all other ward of this zone."

Later, Mayor, MLA, special commissioner, corporators and zonal commissioner inaugurated the IEC campaign pamphlets. Zonal Commissioner Upendra Reddy, Deputy Commissioners Vijay Krishna, Shailaja, B Krishna Shekar, Maruti Diwakar and H Krishnaiah and AMOHs of LB Nagar division participated in the programme.
