Hyderabad: As part of 31st Telangana State Road Safety Week, the Hyderabad Traffic Police organised Traffic Awareness Programme for youth at A V College, Domalguda on Wednesday.

Anjani Kumar, the City Police Commissioner, attended the programme as chief guest and addressed the gathering of about 1,000 college students. Upon his arrival, he visited road safety art works, slogans, road safety tips exhibited by the students of the college and appreciated the works of young minds. At the beginning of the programme, the students exhibited a skit explaining the importance of road safety.

The Commissioner said that youth were the future of India and should develop a habit of being responsible citizens. He asserted that every citizen was a 'policeman' and emphasised that following traffic rules and regulations makes them role models and a lot of responsibility lies upon the youth as they are the future leaders. He urged students to inculcate the culture of 'abiding by law' and following traffic discipline.

He hoped that every student would follow traffic rules like wearing helmet, avoiding overspeeding, triple driving and performing stunts, etc. Anil Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), emphasised the students to get educated about the traffic norms. He informed the students that 1.5 lakh persons were killed in road accidents in India and 6,800 persons in Telangana State which was a great loss to the family and also to nation. "Most of the accidents resulted due to human errors which can be avoided if we follow Traffic Rules which are meant for our own safety," he stressed.

He requested students to avoid driving vehicle without helmet, cell phone driving, signal jumping, wrong side driving and over speeding and cautioned them to be careful and attentive while driving vehicles front or rear side of heavy vehicles. Later, the Commissioner gave away medals to the winners of various competitions on Road Safety organized in association with McDonals Inc. L S Chowhan, DCP (Traffic-I), A Bhaskar, Additional DCP (Traffic-I), K Gouthami, correspondent, Dr Ch Rajalingam, prinicipal and others were present.
