GHMC mulls over stringent action against litterers
To bring awareness among people about the ill-effects of littering in their surroundings, the GHMC sanitation wing under the aegis of ‘Saaf Hyderabad Shaandaar Hyderabad,’ organized awareness rallies at Shastripuram and Mailardevpally on Thursday.

During these rallies, the residents were educated about the adverse impact of littering their surroundings and its implications. Children from different schools took part in the rally and raised slogans like 'Keep Your Surroundings Clean & Swachh' to bring awareness among people about cleanliness and to remind their responsibility towards keeping the surroundings neat and clean.
Following a report published in The Hans India on June 26, 'Littering unabated as officials wary of action,' this awareness rally was taken up. The GHMC Sanitary officials, including Sanitary Inspector Narsimlu, Sanitary Jawan Yesu, Anita, In-charge Garbage Collection Team Ravi, along with staff members, took part in the rally held at Kings Colony in Shastripuram Ward No 58 under Rajendranagar Constituency. Another rally was organized at Ward No. 59 in Mailardevpally, where a large number of school students took part in the awareness drive.
To drag the public attention towards the cause, these serpentine rallies of school children reached almost every street and corner within the marked areas, with children raising slogans against the unethical practice of throwing garbage in open, neglecting the instructions of trash collection teams.
"The crux of the matter is that some people are not disposing off their trash to garbage collection teams and simply littering in their surroundings and throwing in nearby open plots causing dirty ambience and leading to health issues. This prompted us to take the task into our hands and to inform the people about the repercussions of the unhygienic atmosphere being created in their surroundings owing to open littering," Narsimlu said.
"If this does not bear any fruit, then notices will also be served and fines will be imposed against those violators who litter their surroundings or throw garbage in open," Yesu said.
When tried to contact the GHMC Deputy Commissioner for Rajendranagar and the AMOH concerned, they did not respond. Now, it is interesting to see whether the awareness initiative would bring any change on the ground.
