Rajendranagar: In a bid to curb mosquito menace in its limits, the GHMC Rajendranagar circle has started slapping notices on households for letting out water on roads.

In the last one week, the sanitation officials issued notices to households as well as owners of business establishments in Shastripuram Colony for releasing dirty water on the roads, thereby paving for water stagnation points which are soon turning into breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Ironically, the GHMC issued notices in the past too against the practice of littering, but dropped any further action thereafter. "They first serve the notices but shy away from taking any punitive action against the errant people purportedly after receiving political pressure. They did this in the past and are doing the same this time just to wash their hands off their responsibility to protect colonies from seasonal diseases," said Arif, a resident of Shastripuram Colony.

After drawing the attention of people to health risks due to spread of mosquitoes, the GHMC officials have failed to take appropriate action against those letting out water on the roads. "This is nothing more than an eyewash," said Anil, another resident of Shivrampally.

It is pertinent to mention here that, Shastripuram colony suffered a lot in the recent days due to dengue cases. Dengue and other diseases struck people in the area, causing widespread panic. It remains to be seen what action GHMC will take this time against those causing water pools on the roads.

"We have served notices to the people letting waste water on the roads and given them warning against continuing the practice. We will slap notices again, if they fail to mend their ways. However, the third and final notice will give us the right to take a punitive against the errant," said Narsimhulu, the sanitary supervisor, GHMC Rajenranagar.
