Hafez Baba Nagar: It has been about 50-days since the lake bund of Gurram Cheruvu breached and wreaked havoc in several localities near Hafez Baba Nagar. But the Irrigation authorities who began works after assessing the damages are yet to restore the bund.

The bund is still under construction and the road connecting Balapur to Baba Nagar also remains to be reconstructed. People are forced to take a different route on foot through the 'reservoir pipe' to reach the other side by risking their lives.

After the heavy flooding which destroyed the normalcy of colonies of Balapur and Hafez Baba Nagar areas due to the breach on the bund of Gurram Cherevu lake are yet to come to terms with hard truth of life. As precautionary measures, even though the irrigation officials have stopped the water, they could do bare minimal. After assessing they could only take up works for saving the existing reservoir pipeline, by constructing a base to support the massive pipe, which is now used by pedestrians to cross over the localities.

HMWSSB officer who was deployed during the works recently, said observing the flow of water and for future precautionary measures the pillars and base are being constructed. "To support the reservoir two pillars along with a base were constructed. The works of constructing pillars were completed within a week but the remaining works which come under civic body were pending, as soon as the works of construction of bund will be completed the road will be reopened."

Some youth also taking bikes on this pipe

It has been observed that, with the road being closed for the construction works the commuters are walking on the reservoir pipe and reaching the other side of road. "Some are seen taking their bikes on the water reservoir and reaching their destination. Earlier, some policemen were deployed to stop the commuters, but now there is no officer and people are risking their life," said Shaik Salaam, a resident of Balapur road.

The security personnel deployed there said that for the last three weeks no work was being carried out near the lake. Recently, an officer visited and inspected the area, but no further works were done. "As per my superiors, the civic body officers are busy in elections and the works would commence after the elections," he added.
