Karimnagar: The Telangana government will expand its School Breakfast Programme in Karimnagar district with support from the Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Foundation India to provide nutritious morning meals to students.
A centralised community kitchen at the Karimnagar Market Yard, built at an estimated cost of Rs 8 crore, will be inaugurated by Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on September 16. The facility can prepare breakfast for 50,000 students daily. The kitchen will serve 49,025 students across 669 government schools and 11 government junior colleges in 17 mandals covering four Assembly constituencies. The weekly menu includes idli, puri, dosa, upma, millet idli and bonda, with milk served on alternate days. The menu was prepared with support from the National Institute of Nutrition. The programme, piloted in Kodangal in December 2024, reportedly increased attendance from 75 to 90 per cent. Telangana plans 31 centralised kitchens statewide to serve around 17.72 lakh students.
