Kurnool: The Andhra Pradesh Auto Motor Transport Workers Union, affiliated with AITUC, staged a massive dharna in front of the Collectorate on Monday, demanding the immediate constitution of a welfare board for auto workers along with structured financial support for self-employed drivers.
Presided over by union district leader Ganesh, state general secretary A Eswar and AITUC district general secretary Nakki Lenin Babu addressed the gathering.
They questioned the state government over its alleged failure to honor election promises made to transport workers. The leaders urged the government to set up a dedicated welfare board offering ESI, Provident Fund benefits, special welfare reserves, accident ex-gratia, and inclusion in general welfare schemes. Furthermore, they demanded the immediate repeal of GOs 21 and 31, asserting that exorbitant traffic challans impose an unbearable financial strain on daily earners.
The union leaders insisted on the unconditional release of the promised Rs 15,000 annual assistance, interest-free bank loans for new auto purchases, free education for drivers’ children, and housing plots with construction aid.
Additionally, they demanded Rs 10,000 monthly financial relief for drivers affected by Sri Shakti transport services, beside immediate reductions in petrol, diesel prices, and insurance premiums.
AITUC city president G Chandrasekhar, deputy general secretary Ram Anjaneyulu, and city secretary R Krishna Reddy were among the key union representatives participating in the demonstration.
