Nellore: Following poor rainfall driven by the global El Nino effect, ministers and MLAs across Nellore district have performed Varuna Yagams to pray for rain.
Marking an unprecedented dry period, all 36 mandals in the district registered zero rainfall over recent weeks, contrasting sharply with the region’s typically heavy cyclonic rains in October and November.
Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Dr Ponguru Narayana, accompanied by his daughter Ponguru Sharini, participated in a Varunayagam at the Sri Krishna Dharmaraja Swamy temple in Mulapet.
Simultaneously, Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prasanthi Reddy joined farmers and fishermen at the Ramalingeswara Swamy temple in Ramatheerdham village, Vidavalur mandal.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Narayana stated that a 54 percent rainfall deficit has caused drought-like conditions across Rayalaseema, Prakasam, and Nellore. While noting minor improvements in North Andhra, he stressed that most of the state requires widespread rain.
“I prayed for adequate water to be available for farmers to take up cultivation and for people not to face any drinking water shortage,” Narayana said, adding that as per Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s directions, these Yagams are being conducted statewide.
