New Delhi: Congress member from Assam, Gaurav Gogoi, questioned the HRD ministry on the guidelines it had laid down on sexual harassment and bullying in colleges. Referring to the incident in Gargi College on February 6, in which many girl students were reported to have been sexually harassed by hundreds of men, the Congress member asked the HRD minister on the action it had taken in the matter.

Union Minister for Human Resources Development, Ramesh Pokhriyal assured the Lok Sabha that strict action would be taken against the culprits in the matter. He also pointed out that most of them were reported to have been outsiders. He added that no matter who the miscreants in the case are, they will face strict punishment.

Girl students of Gargi College went public with their complaints of sexual harassment by large groups of middle-aged men who barged into their campus during the annual college fest on February 6. Speaking to television channels, several students said that they had been groped by hundreds of middle-aged men who overpowered the security personnel. They also blamed the college authorities and Delhi police for inaction.

The college management has issued an apology in the matter admitting laxity on its part.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police took suo moto cognizance of the matter and registered a case. A team of Delhi police officials visited the college campus and are reported to be examining the CCTV footage.

A team of members of the National Commission of Women (NCW) visited the college campus and spoke to students and staff members.
