Omar Abdullah's Sister Moves SC Over Detention Under PSA
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s sister, Sara Abdullah Pilot, on Monday
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's sister, Sara Abdullah Pilot, on Monday, moved the Supreme Court of India challenging the detention of her brother under the Public Safety act (PSA) claiming that further detention was not necessary since new evidence could not have now been unearthed. She sought the immediate release of her brother as his detention was in violation of freedom of speech guaranteed under the Constitution.
Sara Abdullah Pilot also contends that details regarding his detention under the stringent PSA have not been made available to him. Senior Supreme Court advocate, Kapil Sibal is arguing the case before the apex court. Sibal sought an urgent hearing in the matter claiming that the constitutional rights of the former J &K chief Minister have been violated.
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case on Tuesday, according to media reports.
Omar Abdullah's sister, Sara contends that fresh material could not have been found after the former chief minister has been in detention for six months. Omar Abdullah has been in detention since August 5, 2019, following the abrogation of Article 370. Sara Abdullah Pilot says that it would, therefore, be unfair to detain him under PSA, in violation of his fundamental rights.
