New Delhi: A Public Interest Litigation petition (PIL) was filed in the Supreme Court urging it to order the eviction of protesters demonstrating against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), according to media reports.

The PIL was filed by advocate Ashutosh Dubey and referred to the ongoing spread of novel coronavirus seeking an urgent order from the apex court in the matter.

The Delhi Police, with the help of the local Residents' Welfare Association, had on Tuesday initiated a dialogue with the protesters asking them to vacate the protest site. The Delhi government has banned any gathering of more than 50 people.

The demonstrators protesting against CAA have reportedly refused to give up their agitation from Shaheen Bagh till the Centre revokes the amended citizenship act.

It may be recalled that Shaheen Bagh has been the epicentre of protests against CAA/ National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) since December 15.

In a similar plea which is still pending before the apex court, the Supreme Court had earlier appointed mediators, senior advocate Sanjay Hegde, Sadhana Ramachandran and former cabinet secretary, Wajahat Habibullah to hold talks with the protesters at Shaheen Bagh and appeal to them to vacate the site of protest. In its observations, the apex court said that while protest was a fundamental right, it should not violate the rights of others by causing a convenience.
