The deputy commissioner of police (Crime Branch) Delhi, Rajesh Deo, revealed to the media that the gunman seen brandishing a pistol and firing at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi, Kapil Bainsa, is a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Kapil disclosed to the Delhi that he joined AAP in 2019, according to the police official.

Kapil admitted that he bought the pistol 7 years ago. Photographs of Kapil with AAP leaders, Sanjay Singh and Atishi Marlena were retrieved from his mobile phone with the help of a technical team, according to the police. The gunman had deleted his WhatsApp data which was recovered by the technical team, according to the police official.

The police recreated the entire incident while interrogating Kapil and learnt that he come up to Holy Family hospital near Jamia in the capital, with a friend to whom he gave his phone before sending him away.

Amit Malviya BJP's IT cell head and spokesperson of the ruling party at the Centre described it as a typical AAP operation. He said that Kapil was made to shout politically loaded statements when he fired shots in the air at Shaheen Bagh. AAP's sinister plot in Delhi has been uncovered, he said.
