The increasing cases of Dengue and Chikunguniyan has raised the demand for platelets but this increasing demand is also leading to the shortage of donors, putting doctors in a tough situation to cure patients.
In a recent report, over 250 dengue cases were reported in Delhi, 109 in the first two weeks of August, 19 cases reported in Bengal, Lucknow had 10 cases while 4,348 persons in Bhubaneshwar tested dengue positive including 74 fresh cases reported. Dengue cases have seen a sharp rise with more than 175 cases being recorded in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy till August 14. Four deaths were recorded in July in the State.

D. Ranjith, a registered doctor at Buzz4health informs, “Lack of clean water and sanitation is causing more people to suffer from dengue.
Pools of water after rains serve as an ideal ground for breeding of mosquitoes. “One must ensure that their surroundings are rid of standing water. Mosquitoes-repellent creams or sprays must be used. Sleep under a mosquito net. Cover yourself properly in order to avoid bites. Take adequate rest and drink plenty of fluids,” he said about preventive measures.
It takes weeks to recover from dengue and it usually drains our energy. “Due to increase in number of cases each year, it is tough treating everyone. There is a huge disparity between the number of patients and the amount of facilities. Dengue causes decrease platelets in a patient. There should be adequate supply for blood in the blood banks,” he mentioned.
