Believing anything without any base could be called superstition, said noted physician Dr Samaram while inaugurating the essay writing competitions for the students of schools and colleges on the subject “Superstitions obstruction to the progress”.

Over 800 students of various schools and colleges participated in the competition, which was conducted on the premises of Atheist Centre here. Dr Samaram said that the superstitions would also hamper the development of personality. “The only way to eradicate superstitions is developing scientific temper and scientific outlook,” he added.

He said that the people shed superstitious beliefs like soul, reincarnation, devils, ghosts, Banamati-Chetabadi, Muhurats, Vastu, palmistry which are unscientific. “Various innovations in the fields of science and medicine helped the humanity to progress,” he said.

Niyanta, director of Gora Science Centre, presiding over the meeting, said that the prizes to the winners in the competition would be distributed on July 26, the death anniversary of the late atheist leader Gora.
