Mahindra has been working on a new 2.2-litre petrol-powered engine for the XUV500 and this engine will be based on the same engine block that is the foundation of the mHawk 2.2-litre diesel engine.

The engine specifications, like the power and torque figures are unknown yet, however, the 2.2-litre petrol engine will have a choice of manual as well as an automatic gearbox. The 2.2-litre petrol XUV500 will be available only in a new G-spec variant.

Meanwhile, the automaker is also readying a facelift for the XUV500 with the same mHawk 2.2-litre diesel engine but with a higher power output of 170 HP (a bump of 30 HP). Rivalling the newly launched Jeep Compass, the 2.2-litre petrol-powered XUV500 is expected to join in later.

A petrol powered left-hand drive test mule of the XUV500 with an automatic transmission had been spotted testing in Dubai a couple of months ago. Mahindra is also working on the Scorpio facelift and depending on the response to the petrol XUV500, it will offer the same petrol engine On the Scorpio as well.
