Vijayawada: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Commissioner J Nivas distributed spectacles to students suffering from vision problems here on Wednesday. He was the chief guest at ‘National Girl Child Day’ organised by Inner Wheel Club of Vijayawada.

Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner congratulated the members of the club for taking initiative to organise such an event. Praising the Wheel Club for their effort, the VMC officials said, “Conducting eye tests for about 10,000 students from 50 various government schools, identifying as many as 1,285 students with eyesight problem and distributing spectacles is not a simple task.

” He said that in most of the cases, parents of the students did not know the cause for students not studying well. “When the student has a vision problem, the student avoids reading. Identifying an eyesight problem and distributing spectacles would help, not only in pursuing their studies but also with their future,” he added.

Inner Wheel Club Vijayawada president Rashmi Samaram extended her gratitude to District Collector B Lakshmikantam for granting Rs 4.35 lakh from Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan for this programme and the VMC Commissioner for the support to make the programme a success. She informed that on the occasion of golden jubilee of the club, the members had taken up the eye camp with the help of Sky Health Foundation.
