Vijayawada: The Telugu, Hindi and Cultural department of Maris Stella College celebrated International Mother Language Day on the college premises on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, the college principal Dr Rekha said India has a great culture and tradition when compared with other countries in the world. She feels happy to say that there are students from different mother languages studying in the college. Every student should respect the greatness of their mother tongue, she said.

The chief guest of the programme and writer Poornachand said everyone should have respect towards their mother language, culture and tradition of the country. Telugu language is a sweet language compared to other languages in India. He said that most of the students opt to study in English medium, but one should not forget to read Telugu mythological books and feel the responsibility to make the future generations respect their mother tongue, he added.

Honorary guest Samskrutika Chaitanya Vedika secretary Ramesh said mother tongue is equal to mother and it is the responsibility of every individual to respect their mother tongue. Students performed dances and participated in cultural programmes and entertained the entire audience. Lecturers Dr P Usha, Dr Rama Krishna, Dr Manga devi, Dr Neeraja, Krishna Mohan, Rajeswari, students and others were present.
