Hyderabad: The state administration is gearing up to face yet another cyclone which has been christened Helen and is likely to cross the coast near Kavali on Thursday night.

The cyclonic storm Helen lay over west-central Bay of Bengal and would further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hoursand and cross south Andhra Pradesh coast between Sriharikota and Ongole, close to Kavali, on Thursday night. Revenue officials have asked fishermen not to venture into the sea, which is expected to be rough. Tehsildars and special officers in the 11 coastal mandals have been placed on alert and have been directed to keep enough stock of essential commodities, safe drinking water and medicines in the villages in their jurisdiction in advance. Heavy to very heavy rainfall up to 25cm is expected in Nellore and Prakasam districts while heavy rainfall is likely in Guntur and Krishna districts of south coastal AP, according to state Disaster Management Commissioner C Parthasarathy. "The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal last evening turned into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday morning. Under the impact, heavy rains are likely from this evening," Parthasarathy told reporters today.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) vice-chairman M Shashidhar Reddy said that major damage would be to thatched roofs and kucha houses; power and communications supply may also be partially affected.

Shashidhar Reddy spoke to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Wednesday and asked him to direct state government officials to be ready with some plan on the restoration of essential communications, post-cyclone phase.

He also spoke to other senior state government officials and said the NDMA was in constant touch with the state administration.

The NDMA has called upon the state government to ensure zero casualty preparedness.

Six NDRF teams have been rushed – Ongole (2), Kavali (2), Guntur (1) and Krishna (1). The NDRF has been alerted to be on standby, to rush to other districts on request of the district collectors.

They have been instructed to take all necessary precautionary measures and ensure that people in low-lying areas are evacuated to safer places and ensure zero casualties.
